Social networks, the good, the bad, the ugly

Under Construction

I couldn't resist the title. Just be glad I refrained from using one of the old animated "Under Construction" GIFs.

Since I'm no longer on the hook for anything related to HTML5 and RDFa, I can return to my books. Books, plural, as I hope to be starting a new book within the "traditional" publishing track, soon.

I doubt I'll have much to say over the next few months. Just a heads up that the site may look odd or not work at times, as I try out some new stuff. No worries, it hasn't been taken over by aliens.

Kindle Customer Discussions Demoted

Shelley Wed, 02/11/2009 - 12:08

One interesting change at the Kindle site at Amazon based on the new reader is that the Kindle customer discussion forum, which originally was a top submenu item, has now been demoted to the vague bottom reaches of the web page.

Where the discussion forums originally focused on the wonder of the Kindle, recent discussions have been more critical of the device, the book prices, and Amazon's lack of support for book formats like ePub. Pesky Kindle owners tend to speak their mind.

Amazon has just discovered what many other companies are discovering: integrating social networking is like failed love, amazingly wonderful at first, but eventually evolving into an urge to gnaw your own arm off in order to escape.

PS: Kindle owners, there's always the KindleBoards.

Hiring the Critic

Shelley Wed, 01/28/2009 - 14:19

If I had known Sitepoint would be hiring I may have held back from telling the lead designer that he's full of bull. He was full of bull, though, with his exhortation to XHTML users to grow up. Still, another opportunity lost.

There is no room in this economy for the critic. At least, not unless one is already employed. The wind is blowing towards sweetness and light. Desperately blowing, caught up in the maelstrom of fear and uncertainty.

What should I do? Continue to criticize, until I can no longer afford my web space? Or shut up, and hope that someone safely employed takes the time to respond? I guess I pick my battles. Perhaps only criticize those who can't do me any good, or have no power.

Fah, I sneer at my own words.
